Seeing DC One Fountain at a Time

Earlier in the summer I got the idea to do a tour of the city fountain by fountain.  Today we finally found time to give it a try.  First stop:  the Georgetown Waterfront for breakfast and playing in the "dolphin fountain."

We dried off and jumped in the car.  A quick drive across town and we found ourselves at Meridian Hill Park, a tiny national park right in the middle of the city.  The park has the only statue in DC of President James Buchanan, the only statue of a seated woman on horseback, Joan of Arc, and one of the most beautiful fountains in town.  No swimming in this one, but we made plenty of wishes.

Next stop, Tivoli fountain in Columbia Heights.  Wow, has this neighborhood changed.  And what a fun fountain!

So much playing worked up our appetite, so we stopped to pick up sandwiches.  Then we headed downtown to eat them by the fountain at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.  This beautiful garden and enormous fountain are shady and cool on even the hottest summer day.

Rested and ready we kept heading south.  In the neighborhood near Nationals Park we found our new favorite fountain.  With a waterfall you can walk behind, a knee deep wading pool and big metal lily pads, the kids could have played here for hours.

We dried off one more time and headed back to the mall.  We stopped for an afternoon snack at the National Museum of the American Indian.  The museum has a multi-level meandering fountain that we the perfect place to enjoy our end of the day ice cream and to use up the rest of our wishing pennies!
